The Just Friends Program

A peer mentoring and friendship program that gives teens with a developmental disability the chance to participate in social and recreational activities with volunteer teens that do not have a disability.

What if I don't know anything about people with disabilities?
This will be a great chance to learn! Training sessions are offered for all volunteers.

What is the time commitment?
1) Get together 2 times a month with your friend to do everyday teen activities (e.g., going to the movies, attending sporting events, shopping, bowling, etc.).

2) Contact your friend each week via phone or email.

3) Offer friendship and happiness to your friend.

How do I meet my friend?
You'll be introduced after you finish training.

How do I learn more?
Call (402) 346-5220, ext. 22, or email ldougherty@olliewebbinc.org.

Volunteers Needed:  Just Friends is looking for self-motivated, caring, teens, ages 13 to 19, to be mentors to teens with developmental disabilities.  Mentorship involves doing two activities a month, such as going to movies, out to eat, and to sporting events, with a specially chosen friend with disabilities.  Transportation responsibilities and costs for events are split between the mentor and friend.  Just Friends asks for a one-year commitment from its volunteers. Volunteers receive training, introductions, and ongoing support from staff as well as insights into persons with disabilities, and most importantly, a new friend.
