| The Pilot Parents
Parent-to-parent support for families whose children have a developmental disability.
For most parents, the initial period after they learn their child has a disability is a very difficult time.
Feelings of fear, sadness, anger, depression, guilt and loneliness are typical. Newly informed parents often have questions and concerns that are difficult for their family, friends and helping professionals to respond to and understand.
Pilot Parents can help.
Pilot Parents are parents who have experienced these same feelings and had the same questions. They understand. They have children with disabilities themselves. Pilot Parents are specially trained to provide emotional support and information to parents in order to help them provide the best possible care to their child with a developmental disability. Not only does Pilot Parents offer support and information to families of newly informed families, but parent-to-parent support is also available for parents of older children and adults with developmental disabilities. The need for information and support can be ongoing. Parents are referred to Pilot Parents who have children with disabilities or experiences similar to their own child's.
The Pilot Parent Program
Since the 1970's, Pilot Parents have served as a resource for families in Nebraska who have children with disabilities. The program was founded on the belief that offering parents emotional support and factual information about their child's disability is an important first step in securing the best possible future for their child.
